Childhood allergies can be debilitating for thousands and thousands of young
children, with Australia having one of the highest allergy prevalence rates in
the world. But what actually causes allergies? Why do some children develop
severe allergies, while others show no problems?
The problem may not be the chemicals, toxins or pets as usually suggested, but
the actual person. The ability to adapt to allergens is the responsibility of
the nervous system. Allergies occur when the
immune system overreacts to a
stimulus that the body has mistaken as harmful. When this happens, the body
creates specific antibodies to fight what it has determined to be threatening.
Once the increased amounts of histamines and other chemicals are released, this
may further trigger a cascade of allergic symptoms that can affect the
respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin or cardiovascular system.
Common presentations of allergies include:
- Headaches
- Breathing difficulties
- Weight gain
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Arthritis
- Itchy, runny eyes
- Digestive Difficulties
- Sore throats and recurrent coughs
- Dizziness
- Mental Fogginess, memory and learning difficulties
- Muscle aches
- Hyperactivity
Although a child can develop an allergy to anything,
eight foods account for 90
percent of all food-induced allergic reactions: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts
(walnuts, cashews, etc.), seafood/shellfish, soy and wheat. Other non-food
sources of allergies can be pollen, grass, paint, medicine and chemicals.
While anti-histamines (both prescription and non-prescription) have helped to
reduce the severity of some allergy symptoms, these do not target the causes of
the allergy, but merely reduce the severity of symptoms. Some children also have
to cope with unexpected side-effects of these drugs.
For this reason, natural alternatives to anti-histamine medication should be
pursued. Because allergies are caused by an improper immune response, reducing
allergies requires improving the health of the immune system. This can be
achieved through healthy diets of natural food, and through regular exercise.
Most importantly, improving immune function through regular chiropractic
treatments can help address allergic reactions. Chiropractic treatments can
improve the functioning of the nervous system by reducing any abnormal strains,
which in turn regulates the immune system. Chiropractors can keep your child's
body working at its best capacity to fight off infections and allergens [1].
