Aromatherapy: Calendula Did You know?

Calendula infused oil is one of the most useful ingredients in skin care production. Infused oil is extracted from the petals by soaking them for a fortnight in a pure vegetable oil, such as sunflower or macadamia. Calendula contains natural steroid substances called phytosterols and carotenoids, which make the oil a great regenerating, antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent.

calendula-aromatherapy-massageCalendula infused oil is especially good for treating skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, prematurely aged skin or cases where the skin has been damaged by steroid abuse, acne, wound healing, burns, impetigo and is suitable for all skin types. Calendula promotes tissue repair and minimizes scar formation, resolves inflammation, swelling and weeping wounds due to injuries, and reduces venous congestion.

It can be used on its own, or blended with other vegetable and essential oils, or in homemade moisturisers and hair conditioners. On its own calendula infused oil is also good for insect bites, wasp and bee stings. As it is very gentle, it is commonly used in baby care products as well as soothing mum’s cracked nipples.
